The History of the Garage Door

The Overhead Door Corporation Invented the Garage Door in 1921 and the Garage Door Opener in 1928

At the end of the 1800s, cars appeared and slowly began replacing the horse and buggy. By the end of the early 1900s, thanks to Henry Ford, cars began to become more and more afforable to the masses. Storage for these cars became a problem. Garages began to slowly appear. In fact, the term garage first appeared in the English dictionary in 1902, a derivative of the French term “garer,” which means cover or shelter.

A young man named C.G. Johnson invented the garage door in 1921 and changed the course of the garage door’s place in our history. Johnson took his invention and traveled across the United States with a small prototype of his invention mounted to the back of his Model T, promoting and sharing his new innovation at county fairs and countless small towns.

Johnson was ahead of his time by using sales tactics such as customer coupons and bulletins to share the news about his innovative garage door while creating customer awareness. He established a network of disbributors and soon his invention of the “overhead door” gained widespread popularity. In 1926, Johnson invented the first electric door opener. His inventions created the foundation for C.G. Johnson’s well-respected enterprise that would be become known as The Overhead Door Corporation.
